Safe Temperature for Pavement for Dogs
The safe temperature for pavement for dogs to walk on is generally considered to be below 77°F (25°C). At temperatures above this, the pavement can become too hot for a dog's paws and can lead to burns or discomfort. If theres any doubt when exiting car into a parking lot look for the quickest way to get to grass or carry dog to grass.
Electrolytes for Dogs
Electrolytes are important for maintaining hydration, especially during hot weather or after exercise. Consider using specially formulated dog electrolyte solutions or adding a small amount of low-sodium broth to their water. Always consult with a veterinarian before introducing new supplements.
Best Time of Day to Exercise
The best times to exercise dogs during hot weather are early in the morning or late in the evening when temperatures are cooler. This helps prevent overheating and protects their paws from hot pavement.
Signs of Heat Exhaustion in Dogs
Excessive panting or difficulty breathing
Weakness or lethargy
Drooling or thick saliva
Rapid heart rate
Vomiting or diarrhea
Unsteady gait or collapse
Call vet right away if signs of distress are not going away after trying the following
cool but not cold water
misting with water
Use a fan
dab a little rubbing alcohol on paw pads to help draw out heat
encourage dog to drink but don't force
Keeping Up on Regular Grooming
Regular grooming helps to keep your dog cool by removing excess fur and preventing matting. It also allows for better airflow to their skin, which is crucial during hot weather. Additionally, grooming provides an opportunity to check for signs of heat exhaustion or skin irritations. There are also several options for dog sunscreen which I recommend if planning on spending the day outside with a new shorter haircut!! I use an all over spray year round on all the dogs that come in the shop but its just like human and needs reapplied if spending the day outside.
Summer seems to get shorter every year, so lets make the most of it!
